Here We Are! Editor's Note

School is back in session and the Red Hawk Times is back in production!!! This year we will attempt to put out a weekly issue whenever humanly possible!! Lots of stuff has been happening around home and in Columbus and New York. This year we may include excerpts from Mary, Kevin and Alan's letters home! In that way all of you wil know what is going on in each other's lives. We may also quote letters from friends and the folks in Wisconsin.

The size of the Red Hawk Times has been reduced for two reasons: first this is much easier to run off and second the staff has shrunk ... and staff that is around all seem to be very busy. It seemed to the Editor that the object was to send out the Red Hawk Times so that our college kids hear from us ... with this reduction in size that will be easier to accomplish.

Digging Done? by Alan

No, it's not done. However, closeness has been achieved. A point has been reached where we can stop for the summer. I can remember the day the project began. A strong sense of nostalgia evades my being and a tear forms in my left eye when I look back at the day Dad told us to move his beloved pakisandras. Kevin and I were certain they would never survive and that day Dad was certain we would never finish the dig. Well, we were all wrong. Those pakisandras withstood several transplants and the dig/fill is complete. There remains some landscaping yet to finish but the ditch is full. I think we are pleasantly surprised when we take a look out our back door and see the stone path we created. I can only await the words to come from Dad, "Whoops! That pipe was supposed to be 6 inches deeper!" A digger's job is never done!

Info on Apartments by Mom

For those readers who do not know here is a report on College kids' apartments!!!

Mary Frances arrived at Ohio State and was housed in an efficiency apartment by her landlord until the apartment Al and she rented passed inspection! So Mary just moved into their apartment on Sept. 7th! Vern, I and Alan drove down with all the furniture -- got in at 8 p.m. and had her all moved out of the efficiency and all settled into THE apartment by 12:30 a.m.! We made it home by 2:40 a.m.! (Then Alan went to Ohio University with the Beckstrom family to help settle Jenny on Saturday.)

Kevin moved into his apartment on 9-2. We arrived at his doorstep at 5:30 p.m. I made one trip up the three flights of stairs: 50 steps!!! Kevin, Gregg and Heather did a Herculean task of unloading the van in just under an hour. Vern sat in the van guarding the contents from hords of New Yorkers and I unloaded stuff and fixed up the kitchen. On the last trip Vern was able to climb all 50 steps and see the apartment. (It is large enough for guests!!!) Vern and I left New York at 7 p.m. and found a hotel at 11 p.m. in Sunbury PA. An interesting was to spend a 23rd wedding anniversary!!

I'm Awesome by Brian

Let's hear it for me. I'm awesomely massive. On Sept. 12th, I, Brian E. Peterka tried out for the Brunswick High School children's play. It's called "I'm a Celebrity." I had an excellent try-out so the next day I was called back for a second go-around. In the second round I did excellent again! So on Friday, Sept. 14th, I heard from David during choir I got a part. I was overjoyed!

After the school day was over, I walked to the east wing of the high school to see what part I had and to go to the first rehearsal. When I looked at the cast list I was overwhelmed when I saw that I had the Lead!!!

The play is about the childhood identity problem of Harold Dorfmiller. Harold is teased by his classmates. How does he handle this problem? How can his teachers and parents help him? How can he help himself? You wish you knew! If you want to find out you'll have to come see it, because, I'm awesome!!!

Editors note: Ann Marie also tried out for this play and she got a part plus she is the "music co-ordinator" of this play! Ann plays the game show host. I guess Ms. Mittler really wants Ann to look very funny. The make-up people are already attempting to make Ann's hair stan straight up like Marge Simpsons!!!

School by Nick

I'm in sixth grade this year. My teacher's name is Mrs. Jackowicz. I formerly had her in the fourth grade! I guess she must have missed her fourth grade class so much that she had to move up to sixth grade. I don't know though, with 64 kids in the sixth grade ......

Well not much to say: English is dull as ever, but it is easy. My teacher tries her hardest to make it more fun. Math is O.K. and all other subjects are fine.

So that's what is happening in the sixth grade right now.
